SOVT- Semi-Occluded Vocal Tract

Straw Phonation Information

Some of you may have asked me about why I often have a straw that I’m singing through, or perhaps you are a student or client that I have advised to use this.  It seems like a strange thing, but let me tell you, that this little straw can work wonders.  How?  Why?  The quick answer is it’s a science/physics thing.   AS a teacher and performer, I know this to be quite a helpful bit of therapy that helps inform our bodies of good healthy phonation.

One of my professors in grad school, Dr. Ingo Titze, is the person who is best known for bringing this to light and researching/experimenting with this.  I think hearing from him directly is a good place to start.
